Metonymy

With Greek origins, the noun metonymy has carried itself through history. It means substituting an attribute or asset of a noun for the noun itself—i.e. track for racetrack.

I like this word because it carries lots of meaning, flexing its implications in a few syllables. Our language borrows from every language, which can leave us with legacies of deep meaning.
